Holiday in Ukraine

Mariupol is a city in the Donetsk region of Ukraine and isn't really a tourist destination, it's among Ukraine's less visited places! It is located on the coast of the Azov Sea, in a mouth of the river Kalmius, a large industrial centre and a major sea port in Southern Ukraine

The city was founded by Crimean Greeks and was the first settlement in the Donetsk region and today is ' home ' to 70% of all Greeks living in Ukraine making it the 'centre' of Greek culture within Ukraine. During World War II it was occupied by German forces from 1941 to 1943 and suffered heavy damage. For 41 years it was called Zhdanov in honor of Andrey Zhdanov, (1896–1948), one of Stalin's closest 'partners in crime' and heir apparent, leader of the Leningrad (now St Petersburg) Communist Party!

Today it is the tenth largest city in Ukraine, also the city is the “metallurgical capital” of Ukraine, two of the biggest employers in city (along with the city's sea port and Azovmash machine building) are the Ilyich Iron and Steel Works and Azovstal steel mills.

The architecture differs depending on where you are, if you are in 'old twn' you will see a combination of single story houses, buildings of the so-called “Stalin” architecture and modern buildings that have been built more recently. The city center however is made up of commercial and administrative buildings and is not really residential.

As you walk around the city, especially near the center of the town, you will see many parks such as Gurov's Meadow Park, the City Square( where many theatrical productions take place) and the public City Gardens. As with many towns and cities within Ukraine that are situated on the coast here there is a  reasonable beach!
